Former Navy SEAL Nick Foley reluctantly agrees to help investigate when American CIA operative Peter Yu goes missing in China. But when Yu’s mutilated body washes up on a beach near Hong Kong, along with dozens of other victims, the case takes a macabre turn. Suddenly, Nick finds himself embroiled in another bio-terrorism investigation being conducted by China's elite Snow Leopard counter-terrorism unit and the Chinese CDC, this time involving illegally-harvested organs for an unknown and nefarious end. But Nick’s investigation does not go unnoticed, and soon he finds a target on his back. After thwarting an attempt on his life, he is forced to go off the grid and enlist the help of beautiful CDC microbiologist Dr. Dazhong “Dash” Chen to help unmask his would be killer. On the run and looking for answers, their budding romance is tested at every turn. With each step closer they take to unmasking the truth, Nick and Dash find themselves drawn deeper into a global conspiracy that began over two thousand years ago with the First Emperor of China and now threatens to upset the world order as they know it in Hong Kong Black, the heart-pounding sequel to Alex Ryan's Beijing Red.

A new superfast space plane that skirts the edge of space, inbound on a two-hour jaunt to Hong Kong, collides with a satellite. Metals groan as if in pain. The aircraft slowly overturns. Suddenly the emergency floor lights extinguish. All manner of objects bounce and sail though the cabin. In the darkness some debris strikes passengers. Screams of injury join shouts of terror. Various tourists claw at their restraints, freed, they fall away into darkness. Bounding travelers kick, and swing their arms; scratching the bodies of other sightseers. Indescribable howls fill the fuselage. Deafening, hysterical shrieks eject from every throat. One, clear, horrified voice rises above the others. "GOD! GOD. OH GOD." The terrified screamer could be male or female, extreme fear reshapes the shouter's larynx. This is the ultimate roller-coaster ride. The grinding metal begins to sound musical like the screech of an electric guitar. The space plane lurches into the vastness of the stellar realm. With fuel exhausted and onboard life-gases spewing from its hull, the space plane drifts and twists through space. The vacationer's eyes bulge as they await catastrophe. Passengers draw lots to determine who will be among those saved, but unlike the Titanic, in "New York to Hong Kong in Two Hours!" there are no deferrals for women and children.

This major history of Hong Kong tells the remarkable story of how a cluster of remote fishing villages grew into an icon of capitalism. The story began in 1842 with the founding of the Crown Colony after the First Anglo-Chinese war - the original ‘Opium War’. As premier power in Europe and an expansionist empire, Britain first created in Hong Kong a major naval station and the principal base to open the Celestial Chinese Empire to trade. Working in parallel with the locals, the British built it up to become a focus for investment in the region and an international centre with global shipping, banking and financial interests. Yet by far the most momentous change in the history of this prosperous, capitalist colony was its return in 1997 to ‘Mother China’, the most powerful Communist state in the world. Steve Tsang, drawing on a vast array of official and private sources, both Chinese and European, traces the development of the classic Crown Colony government with its Governors, elite Administrative Officers and non-elected Executive and Legislative Councils, and British-based legal and education systems. Whilst this structure sheltered and nurtured the astounding economic take-off, the vital engine of this development was the mass-immigration of Chinese - hard-working, entrepreneurial, quick to absorb Western ideas while retaining Chinese traditions - blending with expatriate European business interests. The author goes on to examine the effect of the trauma of invasion and defeat at the hands of the Japanese in the Second World War, the stirrings of democracy, the beginnings of Hong Kong identity and the growing influence of China. The story culminates in the saga of the end of the empire with the emotional hauling down of the Union flag and the raising of China’s colours.
